designing the global platfrom for luxury fashion

Farfetch

Farfetch is the global platform for luxury fashion. The flagship is the marketplace farfetch.com but the company aims to fuel the entire industry and powers white label website, from Thom Browne to the recently signed Harrods, as well as augmented in-store retail solutions or integration with third-party applications.

My role as a Product design in the Platform design team is to define the tools that empower our partners and internal team to do their best work. And ultimately make the ecosystem run smoothly.

During my time at Farfetch I’ve had the chance to work across tasks and clusters such as pricing, shipping, product catalogue or customer service.

Process

My work usually starts with a research phase to understand the complex business processes that exist in those spaces, and the actors at play. For instance this lead me to learn about some of the rules of international shipping or the fashion lifecycle in the luxury industry.

I then use those insights, along with my knowledge of human-centred design, to design an interface that supports those user needs. Some common threads to a lot of those tools are the strive for a balance to show the relevant information at the right time, without overwhelming our users.

When dealing with tools for our merchant there is also a requirement to find the middle ground between the needs of the users of the tools and the strategy of the business.

Platform design

Although the main public face of Farfetch is it’s marketplace Farfetch.com, it aims to be a true platform business. What that’s means as a designer is that when creating back office tools special as to be given to make something that will work for the different actors of the platform.

When making a change to the platform capabilities, it should serve the merchant on the marketplace, from the boutique in Naples to the Warehouse in New York, as well as our white label partners for instance.
